Growth rings show limited evidence for ungulates’ potential to suppress shrubs across the Arctic

چکیده

Abstract Global warming has pronounced effects on tundra vegetation, and rising mean temperatures increase plant growth potential across the Arctic biome. Herbivores may counteract impacts by reducing growth, but strength of this effect depend prevailing regional climatic conditions. To study how ungulates interact with temperature to influence shrubs biome, we assembled dendroecological data from 20 sites, comprising 1,153 individual 22,363 annual rings. Evidence for suppressing shrub radial was only observed at intermediate summer (6.5-9°C), even these not strong. Multiple factors, including forage preferences landscape use ungulates, favourable conditions enabling effective compensatory shrubs, weaken possibly explaining weakness ungulate effects. Earlier local studies have shown that demonstrate ungulates’ suppress is always evident, be limited certain

Sea-ice induced growth decline in Arctic shrubs.

Measures of increased tundra plant productivity have been associated with the accelerating retreat of the Arctic sea-ice. Emerging studies document opposite effects, advocating for a more complex relationship between the shrinking sea-ice and terrestrial plant productivity. I introduce an autoregressive plant growth model integrating effects of biological and climatic conditions for analysing i...

Species Show Evidence of Only Limited Modification

Two rhesus and two Japanese macaque infants were cross-fostered between species in order to study the effects of auditory experience on vocal development. Both the cross-fostered and normally raised control subjects were observed over the first 2 years of life and their vocalizations were taperecorded. We classified 8053 calls by ear, placed each call in one of six acoustic categories, and calc...

Episodic death across species of desert shrubs.

Extreme events shape population and community trajectories. We report episodic mortality across common species of thousands of long-lived perennials individually tagged and monitored for 20 years in the Colorado Desert of California following severe regional drought. Demographic records from 1984 to 2004 show 15 years of virtual stasis in populations of adult shrubs and cacti, punctuated by a 5...

Environmental Limits of Tall Shrubs in Alaska’s Arctic National Parks

We sampled shrub canopy volume (height times area) and environmental factors (soil wetness, soil depth of thaw, soil pH, mean July air temperature, and typical date of spring snow loss) on 471 plots across five National Park Service units in northern Alaska. Our goal was to determine the environments where tall shrubs thrive and use this information to predict the location of future shrub expan...

diffraction-limited storage rings

This article summarizes the contributions in this special issue on DiffractionLimited Storage Rings. It analyses the progress in accelerator technology enabling a significant increase in brightness and coherent fraction of the X-ray light provided by storage rings. With MAX IV and Sirius there are two facilities under construction that already exploit these advantages. Several other projects ar...
